Stadiums Go Green

The Impact

Commercial buildings aren’t the only energy drains. Stadiums and entertainment facilities can consume enormous amounts of energy, even when their fans go home.

While some leagues are developing new stadiums to be more energy efficient, others are improving existing venues. These facilities are increasingly seeking energy-saving solutions that can reduce operating costs and carbon emissions.

Property managers of professional stadiums are often leaders in sustainability, with long-standing commitments to green initiatives and venue efficiency. BOSS Controls has worked with professional sports stadiums across baseball, football, hockey, and soccer to reduce plug-load energy waste.

Saving Time, Money and Carbon

Prior to implementing BOSS Wi-Fi Smart Plugs, baseline measurements are used to understand the on/off times and energy use of electrical devices throughout a stadium.

Stadiums may contain thousands of monitors, vending machines, water coolers, and pieces of concession equipment. With BOSS, facility managers can remotely control devices using 120V and 220V Smart Plugs, schedule equipment across different areas of a building, and use condition-based alerts to support facility operations.

Xcel Energy Center Is Reducing Environmental Impact

Channel partner Veterans’ Unisource deployed the BOSS Controls Smart Plug solution at Saint Paul RiverCentre and Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

“We have long been a champion of environmental causes and will continue to seek and implement solutions that reduce energy waste. The BOSS Smart Plug deployment emphasizes our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and defines what it means to be environmentally friendly.”

— Jim Ibister, VP Facility Administration, Minnesota Sports and Entertainment

The Xcel Energy Center, home of the Minnesota Wild, has also been recognized for its sustainability initiatives and building operations.

Energy Savings Report 1

Projected Payback ROI: 12 Months

energy savings report

The first projected energy savings analysis was based on a stadium of approximately 18,500 seats and a deployment of 750 devices.

The analysis evaluated baseline performance against projected performance with BOSS across:

  • Annual energy use
  • Annual electricity cost
  • Annual CO2 output

The baseline sampling included devices such as water coolers, vending machines, TV monitors, and concession electrical equipment.

Energy Savings Report 2

Projected Payback ROI: 9 Months

energy savings report

The second projected analysis was based on a stadium of approximately 75,000 seats and a deployment of 2,000 devices.

The analysis again compared projected baseline performance with projected performance using BOSS for annual energy use, electricity cost, and CO2 output.

Actual savings depend on factors including electricity cost, device operating schedules, equipment type, and off times.
